As part of my work with the Border Queen Harvest Hub (BQHH), I’ve had the opportunity to visit some incredible places that embody the heart of locally grown food. Each one has what I call the “secret sauce” with owners who are truly passionate about what they do.
My recent visits included Ellis Island in Belle Plaine, Bachman’s in Deer Creek, Okla., Sunny Creek Trading Post in Ponca City, Okla., and Hager Acres Farm to Home in Caldwell. An article about Ellis Island was written recently in Sumner Cowley Electric's Newsletter.
One particularly eye-opening visit was to the source of much of Hager Acres Farm to Home’s products, their farm. Kimmy, the owner, raises chickens, honeybees, herbs, goats and pigs, and she shared a wealth of knowledge with me. I learned keeping different breeds of chickens helps her track their ages and that having a black chicken in the coop can deter hawks by mimicking a crow. She also uses her greenhouse to not only sprout herbs but to provide a warm, safe place for baby chicks.
Kimmy introduced me to the concept of a chicken tractor, a portable enclosure that allows her to move chickens around the yard, giving them access to fresh forage while protecting them. She also emphasized the importance of knowing when neighboring farmers spray their wheat so she can safeguard her bees.
One of the most fascinating takeaways from my visit was the stark difference between eggs from free-range chickens versus those from confined hens. When cracked open side by side, free-range eggs have yolks that are a much deeper yellow—sometimes even orange—due to their nutrient-rich diet. These eggs are packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.
Visiting these farms and businesses reaffirmed the importance of supporting local producers who are dedicated to their craft. I’m excited to continue exploring and sharing these local food gems with our community!
