Talk about jumping into farm life with both feet! Donnie and Monica Young moved to Wellington from Park City, Kansas, just four months ago after purchasing 20 acres to live out their dream of farm living. And what an adventure they’ve had so far!
Previously, the Youngs worked in financial services, but Monica and Donnie had already been experimenting with urban farming in Park City. Now, they’re taking that dream to a whole new level!
Their 20-acre farm is quickly becoming home to quite the collection of animals and projects. They’ve dug a four-foot-deep pond for their ducks and chickens, and Donnie has built six chicken coops to house their feathered friends. They’re currently collecting about two dozen eggs a day!
The farm is also home to rabbits, goats, a Shetland pony, and 12 guinea pigs! The goats are helping clear the acreage, and one particularly memorable character greeted me at the gate. Meet Joe Dirt!
I learned something new during my visit, too. Apparently, male goats have some pretty unusual ways of attracting the ladies-such as urinating on themselves! Let's just say Joe Dirt has a personality all his own! The Youngs have two Pyrenees working dogs that live with the goats, used to deter predators.
The Youngs also have goat milk for sale right on the farm.
But wait, there’s more! They’ve planted a fruit tree orchard, started a pumpkin patch, and even tucked in a few carrots. They’re also renovating their home and digging a well. All of this in just FOUR MONTHS!
Their vision goes beyond raising animals and growing food. Donnie and Monica hope to develop agritourism opportunities and work with local schools to give children hands-on experiences learning about farm life. What a wonderful way to help the next generation connect with where their food comes from!
Their children are grown and live elsewhere, so farm life currently includes Donnie, Monica, and Donnie’s mom, Pam. And here's a fun local connection: during our visit, we discovered that my husband was Donnie’s shop teacher back in Maize! I love seeing Donnie put those construction skills to work building their farm dream.
Monica also has a sweet business in Wichita! Be sure to check out her freeze-dried candy shop, M.Y. Snackies, at https://my-snackies.com/.
