We’re excited to welcome Mayfield Grocery and Locker to the Border Queen Harvest Hub family!
This charming little grocery store has been part of the Mayfield community for generations. Joe and CJ Metzen purchased the store in 1947, and Joe’s son, Gene, grew up helping out before buying his dad’s half in 1957. Gene worked alongside CJ until 1974, when he became the sole owner.
The tradition continued when Gene’s son, Steve, followed in his footsteps—learning the art of butchering from his dad at age 16 and working full-time by 18. Around that same time, a cute teenager named Jamie started working at the store for extra spending money. When she turned 18, Steve finally asked her out, and the rest, as they say, is history! They married in 1988 and have worked side-by-side in the store ever since.
After marrying, Steve and Jamie settled in Mayfield, just a block from the house where Steve grew up, to raise their family. Their daughter Isabella, grew up helping in the store just like her dad and grandfather before her. While she chose a slightly different path—studying health science with a minor in public health—she’s still connected to the spirit of community and care that defines Mayfield Grocery. She plans to earn her master’s in medical dosimetry.
Next time you’re in Mayfield, stop by this delightful little store, say hello to the family, and enjoy the warm welcome that has kept customers coming back for generations!
