Wow—did anyone else make it out to the Oxford area farm tours last weekend? What a beautiful day it was!
I started my rounds at Flying Toad in Oxford, where Josh and Shayla had an amazing supply of vegetables and pumpkins. I picked up four huge pumpkins, and Josh shared a great tip: if you fill any little nicks with wax, they’ll last much longer!
Next, I stopped at Kilt’s beautiful farm, which had the most inviting ambiance. With music playing, Adirondack chairs set up for guests, and wine samples to enjoy, Tory and Lisa really know how to entertain. Tory even gave orchard tours, explaining the differences between the berry varieties they grow.
My third stop was the pecan patch with Rick and Myra Jacobs—and wow, they have really expanded! They now have a hoop house full of pumpkins, free-range chickens, goats, and an orchard with 400 pecan trees of different varieties. Myra, a retired teacher, absolutely charmed the kids with her gnome home story, sharing how gnomes “travel” from the orchard to prepare the pecans. I left with a sample to try and a new appreciation for the pecan business. Their harvest begins in November, so be sure to visit then for fresh pecans!
Finally, I visited the Elam Lavender and Honey Farm, where Rick, Ingrid, and their daughter Amanda welcomed everyone with lavender fields and buzzing hives. They create beautiful lavender products and delicious honey. Rick and Amanda took turns giving tours to explain their process, and I couldn’t resist taking home fresh lavender stalks and some honey—perfect timing since local honey always helps my allergies!
What an incredible day seeing the beauty and diversity of our local farms.
