Just a Girl and Her Chicken Coop

Kirstan Wylie has been dreaming of owning chickens for quite some time. Back when she was still teaching, her coworkers would even gift her collectible chickens for her classroom—everyone knew it was her thing!

After retiring last summer, that dream didn’t go away. In fact, it only grew stronger. Her husband, Sam, brought it to life by building the most beautiful chicken coop—complete with perfect little nesting boxes and tiny ladders for the hens to tiptoe across from one space to the next.

The coop was ready… and finally, so were the chickens!

Through her involvement with the hub—where she shares her homemade sourdough bread—Kirstan connected with Nate Ross, who generously shared five of his chickens and offered helpful tips to get her started.

And here’s the best part: believe it or not, one of the hens laid an egg while being loaded into the truck! Then, as if right at home, two more laid eggs as soon as they settled into their new nesting boxes.

Now comes the really important decision—naming them! Kirstan is having fun tossing around ideas for her California Tan hens: Hennifer, Honey, Princess layer have been named. Other ideas include Cluck Norris, Eggatha, and Yolko Ono.

What do you think—did she nail it, or do you have a name to add to the list?
