What started as a 10-year-old boy’s dream has grown into a thriving family farm full of personality, hard work, and love for animals. Frank and Sheila Beesely, proud K-State alums from Conway Springs, KS, shared their incredible journey with me—and it all began with a simple request.
When their son, Gavin, was just ten years old, he begged his mom to let him join 4-H and work with goats. Sheila finally gave in, not realizing that decision would change their family’s life forever. Today, the Beesely farm is home to approximately 65 goats of various breeds, including Nubian, Alpine, and Saanen dairy goats. These goats are raised for both meat and milk production, as well as for showing—something the family has become passionate about over the years.
Sheila told me that each goat has its own name and personality, making every day on the farm a little more fun. She shared the story of one mama goat who willingly nurses multiple kids that aren’t even her own—a generous but surprisingly independent goat!
Gavin’s early passion has carried into adulthood. Now grown, married, and a graduate of Kansas State University, Gavin works as the Sumner County Extension 4-H Development Agent, helping other youth experience the same joy he found in agriculture. Sheila continues to lead and mentor in the goat world while also mastering the art of making cheese from their goats’ milk—a true farm-to-table skill.
The Beesely family’s story is a wonderful example of how one small “yes” can grow into something truly extraordinary. We’re thrilled to welcome Frank, Sheila, and their amazing herd to the Border Queen Harvest Hub community!
